Jordan Poulas, MD

Dr. Poulas, an esteemed ophthalmic surgeon, has been dedicated to the field of Ophthalmology in Thessaloniki since 1984. Born in 1953 in Constantinople, he embarked on his journey in medicine at the Medical School of A.U.Th., graduating in 1978. He obtained the title of specialist ophthalmologist in 1984 and earned his doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1988. In 1989, Dr. Poulas made significant strides in the field by introducing Myopia operations following an educational clinical tutorial at the Moscow Ophthalmological Institute under the guidance of Prof. S. Fyodorov. He furthered his expertise in 1990 at the Cincinnati Eye Institute in Ohio, USA, focusing on modern techniques of cataract removal with phacotripsy. Dr. Poulas's pioneering spirit led him to become the first in Thessaloniki to perform Myopia correction using Fyodorov's Radiant Keratotomy technique in 1990. He continued to push boundaries, introducing Phacotripsy for cataract surgery in Northern Greece in 1991. His groundbreaking work was showcased at various scientific gatherings, contributing to the advancement of eye surgery techniques. Embracing Excimer Laser technology in 1995, Dr. Poulas expanded his repertoire, becoming proficient in LASIK for Myopia, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism correction during his tenure in Heraklion, Crete, collaborating closely with Prof. I. Pallikaris. Returning to Thessaloniki, Dr. Poulas became a trailblazer in LASIK surgery, garnering recognition from his peers and serving three consecutive terms on the Board of Directors of the Ophthalmological Society of Northern Greece, including a presidency from 2000 to 2002. His contributions to Ophthalmology were further acknowledged with the title of FEBO (Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology) and the European Diploma in Ophthalmology in 2001. Dr. Poulas's scientific prowess earned him invitations to speak at international Ophthalmology conferences and demonstrate live surgeries abroad. In recent years, Dr. Poulas has pioneered techniques for Presbyopia correction and Keratoconus stabilization, applying Multifocal Intraocular Lenses and the Cross Linking technique, respectively. Currently, Dr. Poulas operates at the state-of-the-art Ophthalmological Institute iLaser A.E., utilizing cutting-edge technology such as the Alegretto Eye Q 400 HZ by Wave Light. As a founding member and Chairman of the Board of iLaser, he remains committed to training new ophthalmologists in advanced techniques like Lasik, Prk, and Cross Linking, ensuring a legacy of excellence in eye care. He has served as the head of the ophthalmology departments of Ag. Loukas (1985-1989), Sarafianou Clinic (1989-2001), and has been an external partner of Trans-Balkan Medicine since 2001.
