Ioannis Jafetas, MD, PhD

Dr. Tzafettas, MD, PhD, FRCOG, is a prominent figure in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, holding the esteemed position of Professor of Medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). With a career spanning over three decades, Dr. Tzafettas has left an indelible mark on the medical landscape of Greece and beyond. He commenced his journey in medicine at the School of Medicine of AUTH, where he laid the groundwork for his illustrious career. Driven by a passion for advancing the field of Reproductive Medicine, he pursued further training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in England, undertaking studies at the renowned St. Thomas Medical School in London. Throughout his career, Dr. Tzafettas has been at the forefront of groundbreaking research and clinical practice in Reproductive Medicine, with a particular focus on Fetal Uterine Medicine. His dedication and expertise have earned him recognition as a founding member of one of the earliest IVF centers in Greece, where he played a pivotal role in pioneering advancements in Assisted Reproduction. In addition to his clinical endeavors, Dr. Tzafettas is a prolific author, having penned numerous medical publications, including five books, and presented over 250 papers in Greek and International medical journals and conferences. As the Scientific Director of the Thessaloniki IVF CENTER, he continues to lead innovative research initiatives aimed at furthering our understanding of Assisted Reproduction techniques. Dr. Tzafettas's leadership extends beyond the confines of his clinical practice, as he has played a key role in shaping the landscape of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Greece. He has served as the 1st Vice President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Greece and has been instrumental in establishing the Hellenic Representative Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). Furthermore, his efforts in organizing the MRCOG examination center in Thessaloniki have been pivotal in providing aspiring medical professionals with the opportunity to acquire internationally recognized credentials. Beyond his medical achievements, Dr. Tzafettas has delved into extensive research on 19th-century expatriate Hellenism, garnering recognition from prestigious institutions such as the Athens Academy.   • Graduation from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH): Completed medical education at the School of Medicine of AUTH. 

  • Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in England: Undertook six years of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, primarily at St. Thomas Medical School in London. Presented doctoral thesis and engaged in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. 

  • Return to Greece and Career Advancement: Returned to Greece and progressed through the medical hierarchy to become a full professor and MD of the 2nd Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic at AUTH. 

  • Executive Role at Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Greece: Served as the 1st Vice-President of the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Greece for the last 10 years.

  • Scientific Directorship: Appointed as the Scientific Director of the Thessaloniki IVF CENTER at the European Interbalkan Medical Center of Thessaloniki. 

  • Membership in Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG): Recognized as a member of the RCOG, later elected as a Fellow after a trial.

  • Role in Hellenic Representative Committee: Played a leading role in establishing the Hellenic Representative Committee of RCOG for Greece and Cyprus, serving as its 1st president from 2002-2007 and re-elected for the 5-year period 2012-2017. 

  • Establishment of International Examination Center: Established an international examination center for the acquisition of the MRCOG degree outside of Britain.

  • Honorary Positions: Served as honorary Vice President of the American Biographical Institution ABI and Member of the Board of Directors of the 'Who is Who in Medicine' Institute in Cambridge, England.
